Retirement community’s culinary team presents themed dining nights

The themed dining events may focus on a holiday, such as Halloween and Thanksgiving, or on a particular culture. On Sept. 26, residents will be treated to a Japanese-themed meal that featured sukiyaki (Japanese stew) and tuna broiled with shoyu (soy sauce) and mirin (rice wine). Besides these entrees, diners will choose miso or black sesame soup, sunomono (cucumber salad), steamed rice, tempura vegetables, green beans with sesame seeds and miso, and desserts including dorayaki (sweet bean pancake) and green tea ice cream. The meal will be accompanied by sake sangria and green tea. 

“Themed nights give the culinary team creative license on different themes to create memorable meals for our residents,” Tivvis says. “Each culture has its own style, customs and flavors, which increase variety and remind individuals of their previous travels and future destinations.” 

The culturally themed menus often are created with Ingleside at Rock Creek’s clientele in mind. The retirement community draws its unique population that ranges from retirees from the Foreign Service and State Department to former educators, writers, artists, musicians and successful entrepreneurs. 

Upcoming menus include a Hispanic dinner and an Irish meal. To ensure authenticity, “we are getting input from residents who have lived or worked in Hispanic countries as well as engaging our staff who are from Central and South America,” Tivvis says. 

Food will, of course, play a central role in the retirement community’s annual Oktoberfest celebration on Sept. 30. The chefs are still working on the menu, which will include traditional German foods and beverages. Several tents will be set up on the campus, and each will be decorated with its own theme. Pretzel making will be among the activities that will accompany the meal. 

In addition to creating holiday and cultural themes, the community’s dietitian and executive chef partner to create superfood action stations. The station highlights one superfood each month and educates residents about its benefits to help them make healthy food selections. The superfood of the month is introduced with a presentation that is eye-appealing, tasty and highly nutritious. 

“A superfood is a nutrient-dense food that should be a staple in our diets due to its health benefits,” Tivvis says. September’s superfood is tomatoes; mushrooms will be featured in October, chia seeds in November, and nuts in December. 

The dining staff also chooses a seasonal fruit that is served each month in the café. In September, the featured fruit is Jona Gold apples. Macintosh apples will be featured in October and pears in November. 

All of the meals prepared in Ingleside at Rock Creek’s professional kitchens focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients combined in creative dishes and reflect our belief that eating well is a crucial part of living well.   

It’s no wonder that, even with all of the dining options in the District that are close to Ingleside at Rock Creek, residents usually prefer to enjoy their meals right here in the community!
