Spring Forward: Ideas for Decorating Indoors and Out

After a long and cold winter, is there anything more uplifting than the promise of spring. Even if you live where the season arrives on the calendar before the warm weather does, it feels better just knowing that the cold and snow will be left behind and spring and summer are on their way.

Spring is also a great time to freshen up your home and bring in the brightness and light of the season. Take a look around, both inside and out, when considering your decorating options. Remember, even small changes can make a bold statement.

It’s amazing what a little color and Mother Nature can do, not only for your home but for your mood as well.

Spring decorating tips

Check with your community guidelines first, and when you’re ready to welcome spring, consider these suggestions to get you started:

1. Add the colors of spring

Swap out the heavier fabrics and colors of fall and winter for the pastels or bright and contrasting hues of the new season. Think greens, yellows, whites and blues. Be creative in how you add them. Colorful picture frames, exchanging your wood framed mirror for one with rattan or creating a bowl of lemons and limes for your kitchen counter are just a few ideas.

2. Flowers say it best

Do you have an easy source to access fresh flowers? If so, you can’t go wrong with this tip. Cut flowers are one of the best ways to introduce both the season and its vibrant colors and scents. Bring in bunches of tulips, lilacs or your personal favorites. Place in clear vases around your rooms and don’t forget the powder room or your bedside table.

3. Make a colorful wreath

A wreath is a great spring decorating tip and not only will it welcome in the season, but your guests and yourself when you arrive back home. Try a grapevine wreath for your base and get creative from there. Attach beautiful faux flowers, moss, colorful ribbon or even a single initial to personalize your front door.

4. Add a spring wreath inside

There are no rules that wreaths only belong to the winter holidays – or on a front door. Make yours with your favorite flowers and colors. Spend a little time in a crafts store and you’ll find no shortage of ideas on what you might want to add. Buy a wreath hanger that goes over the top of your door to eliminate any nail holes. Or place on a mirror, wall or on your mantel.

5. Spruce up your entryway

Faux flower arrangements have come a long way. You can simulate almost any plant or flower and if you have the space, arrange a group of pots of different heights to create an area of interest. Consider adding accessories, such as a basket of robin eggs or a welcome sign - after checking with your community first of course.

6. Bring nature inside

If you have great natural light, add some plants to enjoy the different shapes and colors of greenery. Make sure you have a plant-friendly spot and understand which plants need full or partial sun. You’ll also want to purchase planters that allow for watering and good drainage, without leaking. If you have the right windowsill, consider starting your own herb garden.

7. Mix and match your vases

One great decorating tip is to purchase vases in different materials, shapes and heights to hold the same type of flowers. Or go the other way with similar containers but a wide range of blooms. If you have the space, a grouping of plants and flowers create a focal point. Adding tall grasses and low growing plants is a great creative touch.

8. Brighten up your tablecloth and towels

Spring is a great time to switch your tablecloth or runner with a new color or design. Coordinate your placemats and napkins so the next time you have friends over for lunch, the spring season will welcome them as well. Don’t forget the bathroom. New bath and hand towels in spring colors and designs can really bring a glint of interest to the room.

9. Freshen up your throw pillows and blankets

Whatever design or color you like, there are so many choices today it’s easy to mix and match. And now you can purchase covers so it’s even more effortless to change out your pillows and refresh a room for every season. Don’t forget it can still get cool in the evenings so consider adding a light cotton throw to drape over a chair.

10. Remember your outdoor space

Beyond potting plants and flowers, add a fresh and welcoming doormat, bird feeder or wind-chime. Create an area of interest on your patio or balcony with different sized containers or a small statue, birdbath or water fountain. Change out your chair cushions or add a small table so you can enjoy your morning coffee or lunch outdoors.
