Residents have a field day for brain health

The residents of Ingleside at Rock Creek are celebrating Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month by engaging in one of the best activities to keep a brain healthy—moving.

 Being active is associated with a lower risk of brain issues, and the retirement community is conducting fitness activities June 21 (the longest day) to recognize Alzheimer’s, bring awareness about brain health and support the Alzheimer’s Association. Participants are joining people across the country in The Longest Day event on the summer solstice to raise funds to fight the disease. 

Researchers are making many exciting new discoveries that reveal the close connection between our bodies and our brains. According to the Administration for Community Living (ACL), a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, it turns out that the same habits and activities that contribute to overall wellness are also good for our brains. 

First and foremost, the ACL recommends that we get our hearts pumping for at least 30 minutes most days. Taking a brisk evening walk, playing with the grandkids or participating in a more formal, regular exercise program fills the bill. A healthy, low solid-fat diet with lots of fresh fruits and veggies, keeping blood pressure under control, getting a good night’s rest, staying connected with friends and family and challenging our brains by learning something new are other steps we can take to promote healthy brains. 

On June 21, Ingleside at Rock Creek residents and guests are enjoying a fun walk around the community, passing by the pool, Fitness Center, art room, theater, gallery and courtyard. Residents can receive fitness evaluations using the Senior Fitness Test protocol and enjoy healthy snacks and beverages provided by Dining Services Director Tim Tivvis and his staff. An information booth will provide information about brain issues provided by the Alzheimer’s Association. 

Fitness Manager Chris Goldman hopes the Longest Day event will become an annual occasion to raise awareness about brain health and raise funds to fight Alzheimer’s disease. Every day, however, the community offers water aerobics in the indoor, heated swimming pool and scheduled exercise classes, plus personal training and fitness equipment to help residents attain optimal fitness. The community’s wooded and landscaped grounds adjacent to Rock Creek Park encourage residents to take a walk in the beauty of nature. Healthy dining options are available daily. 

The retirement community offers plenty of activities that promote social engagement and lifelong learning. Residents enjoy discussion groups, classes, entertainment, trips to cultural attractions and performances, and creative pursuits including crafts such as mosaic making in the art studio. It’s easy for folks to make friends in this welcoming, caring community, and all of that helps to keep bodies and minds engaged and healthy.
