Art exhibit showcases works from Ingleside family of retirement communities

Art benefits both the artist and the viewer. Recent research has shown that making art has both physical and psychological benefits. A groundbreaking study of art’s positive effects on health as we age found that, for both artists and art appreciators, art aids relaxation, reduces depression and anxiety, encourages playfulness, improves cognitive functions, increases self-esteem, nurtures spirituality, provides social opportunities and improves communication with others. In addition, art promotes active engagement in life in positive, fulfilling ways.

That is why Ingleside at Rock Creek, an Ingleside continuing care retirement community, encourages residents to pursue their artistic passions, and even to discover art talent they didn’t know they had.

The retirement community offers art classes for residents, both experienced artists and beginners, in a well-appointed art studio. A group of residents specializes in mosaic making, thanks to resident Bunty Ketcham, who started the Ingleside Mosaic Guild in 2007 and teaches the art form. Their beautiful works are displayed throughout the community. Artists work in other media including drawing, painting. Since the studio is open 24/7, it is used day and night by residents who come to work on their art projects.

The community hosts exhibits of resident-created art six times a year in its gallery, but a show that will open in early April will be a little different. The show, titled “Three Sisters Traveling Art Exhibit,” features work from artists at all three Westminster-Ingleside communities. Each community—Westminster at Lake Ridge and Ingleside at King Farm, in addition to Ingleside at Rock Creek—provided about 20 pieces of framed art for the show, which opened in February at Westminster at Lake Ridge in northern Virginia. After two months on display at Ingleside at Rock Creek, it will be packed up, shipped and hung at Ingleside at King Farm in suburban Maryland.

The traveling exhibit was the brainchild a resident artist at Westminster at Lake Ridge, who suggested that the three communities get together to celebrate the active, creative life that they share.

“The communities were looking for something that all three Ingleside organizations could do,” Bunty Ketcham says. “The head of our art studio and one of our prominent artists selected 20 pieces from our residents, choosing from both those who participate in art classes and those who work independently.”

The Three Sisters Art Show consists of works in pastels, acrylic, watercolor, drawings and one quilt made from antique silk. A variety of subject matter is represented, including landscapes and portraits. Descriptive tags accompany each work.

By the time the show reaches Ingleside at Rock Creek, “we will have a whole nice, new art display system in our gallery provided by the community,” Bunty Ketcham says. “With this show we will have a good display system. The community is going to provide that.”

Ingleside at Rock Creek offers residents a myriad of choices to create a vital, fulfilling lifestyle that includes lifelong learning, wellness and opportunities to feed the spirit. It shares with its sister communities a commitment to engaged living that attracts a diverse, accomplished and talented group of residents eager to make the most of their retirement life.
