Retirement community’s residents explore the world through speaker series

Ingleside at Rock Creek continues its fall speaker series with three presentations that span a range of national and international topics.

On Dec. 4, the resident-sponsored speakers committee presented a talk by Jackie Serwer, chief curator for the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

The museum, currently under construction on the National Mall, is scheduled to open next year. It will feature 11 major exhibits that reflect the depth and breadth of African-American experience in the United States and present a greater understanding of African American history and culture.

Serwer is the museum’s senior curator and has an extensive background in art and curation at institutions including the Corcoran Gallery and the Smithsonian. She holds a B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College, an M.A. from the University of Chicago and a Ph.D. from the University of New York.

As part of her talk, Serwer told a fascinating story about the recent recovery of a slave ship from the bottom of the ocean near Mozambique, says IRC resident Allen, who chairs the retirement community’s speakers committee.

“This is the first time they’ve ever found a fully intact slave ship,” Allen says. “They’ve been working to get some artifacts from there for the museum.”

Ingleside at Rock Creek resident Sinclair will present the Dec. 11 talk, titled “An Arctic Adventure.” Her talk will focus on a trip to the Arctic area.

And on Dec. 18, Roger, a retired ambassador who also lives at IRC, will talk about what Russian President Vladimir Putin is up to, in a presentation titled “Putin’s Game.”

“He is an extremely knowledgeable Russian expert who is very smart, very articulate and a good speaker,” Allen says. “It’s fun to have these folks from within our own community.”

Serwer and Sinclair’s presentations highlight the committee’s effort to recruit speakers on a variety of topics, Allen says, and they are fortunate to be able to draw from IRC’s own population.

Ingleside at Rock Creek, a continuing care retirement community attracts residents who have accomplished much in their lives in fields spanning government service, education, entrepreneurship and the arts. These people have chosen IRC for their retirement lives because they and their neighbors continue to be active and engaged in the community and curious about the world.

That is why IRC offers so many opportunities for residents to learn and to serve. The speaker series, sponsored and directed by residents, for residents, is a perfect reflection of the community’s values and the diverse interests of its residents.
