Health Services Center resident honored for her beautiful poem

Sachiko, a resident of Ingleside at Rock Creek, has a way with words. Her poem, entered in a contest to celebrate Residents’ Rights Month, was selected as the best piece submitted by a resident of Ingleside at Rock Creek’s Health Services Center.

October is Residents’ Rights Month, an annual event that honors residents living in long-term care centers. It’s a time to celebrate and recognize the rights of every resident to live in a safe environment.

Each year, the D.C. Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program celebrates Residents’ Rights Month by participating in a challenge involving residents and staff of long-term care centers in the D.C. area. This year’s challenge encouraged residents to pick up a pen, dust off their typewriters or use a computer to write a poem related to the theme of “Care Matters.”

Brittany Moore, activity supervisor for the Health Center, asked residents if they would like to participate, and three residents wrote poems for submission. A group of 33 volunteers at the Ombudsman Program’s office read all of the entries and selected winners from each center.

Sachiko’s poem was chosen, and she was honored at the Ombudsman Program’s annual Residents’ Rights Month luncheon on October 16, 2015. During the luncheon, Sachiko read her poem to the attendees.

Moore is having all of the Ingleside entries framed. They will be displayed within the Health Services Center.

AARP administers the Ombudsman Program, which advocates for people receiving long-term care services to improve their level of care and quality of life. The program is part of AARP’s Legal Council for the Elderly program.

Residents’ Rights Month was originated by The National Consumer Voice for Quality Long-Term Care, an organization that represents consumers in issues related to long-term care and helps to empower long-term care residents.

Members of the Ingleside at Rock Creek community receive first priority in the Health Services Center. That’s why so many people choose Ingleside at Rock Creek, a Continuing Care Retirement Community. There is so much peace of mind in knowing that high-quality health services are available right on campus if the need arises or they require long- or short-term rehabilitation. Congratulations, Sachiko, on a job well done! Here is Sachiko’s poem, which perfectly reflects Ingleside at Rock Creek’s devotion to compassionate care and ensuring the independence, dignity and self-determination of every resident:

Care does matter, whether people know it or not.

People do care. Everyone cares. No matter the look on a person’s face, It doesn’t have to physically show. It is shown through the heart, It is shown through the actions of each person.

People respond to the care they receive. It makes a difference in their lives. Care is forever growing, It passes on to each and every person affected by it.

People profit from compassionate care. It affects their feelings, It affects their mood, It affects their quality of life.

Be attentive, be considerate, be helpful. Smile. Care.
