Have you made these important retirement health care decisions?

blog-decision.jpgSome of the most important decisions you’ll ever make concern the future of your health care.

Once you make the decision to join a Continuing Care Retirement Community, you and your family can enjoy peace of mind when it comes to your future health care needs. If you require health care support in the future, you’ll have access to it right on your campus. Compassionate, highly skilled health care professionals at quality communities like Ingleside at King Farm, Ingleside at Rock Creek and Westminster at Lake Ridge administer the programs that enable you to achieve maximum wellness of body, mind and spirit. That means you’re free to enjoy the active, engaged retirement lifestyle you want.

There’s another decision crucial to assuring that your health care wishes are respected and carried out. An Advance Directive specifies your desires about your health care and/or appoints someone to make decisions about your medical treatment if you can’t make them for yourself. Examples of Advance Directives are living wills and Durable Powers of Attorney.

Sounds pretty important, doesn’t it? And yet more than two-thirds of adults in the United States have not taken the time to draw up Advance Directives.

That’s why hundreds of local, state, national and international organizations are asking you to think about your wishes about life-sustaining treatment, do-not-resuscitate orders, palliative care, pain management, hospice and other procedures during National Healthcare Decisions Day, April 16, 2015.

There are tons of resources for individuals and families on the National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD) website to help you learn about the documents you will need to execute. The folks involved with the NHDD campaign recommend that everyone who has not already drawn up those documents does so on April 16. If you’re not ready yet, they recommend that you at least begin a conversation about Advance Directives by talking with family members, your doctor or others you trust.

Every adult, regardless of age, needs to have an Advance Directive in place. Why not be the person in your family who starts the conversation? There’s no better time to do it than right now.
