Good news from new research: Light exercise benefits older people

You know you have to exercise to keep fit and healthy. But does that mean you have to do strenuous workouts? A new study from Oregon State University indicates that walking, dancing and household chores is nearly as effective as more vigorous exercise—if you do it long enough. 

“You get a nice array of health benefits by doing five hours of light physical activity per week,” said Dr. Brad Cardinal, a professor in the College of Public Health and Human Sciences and co-author of the study.

Spiritual Life Director ministers to retirement community’s members

Wellness is more than just health of the body. Besides physical health, we believe emotional, social, vocational, intellectual and spiritual fitness are part of overall wellness. 

For the past 10 years, Rev. Ruth Kent has been ministering to the spiritual needs of Ingleside at Rock Creek members. As Director for Spiritual Life, she is the person who helps identify and provide resources that enrich the community’s spiritual life.

“I think there are so many avenues for people to access what provides meaning and purpose in life,” Rev. Kent says. “The trajectory for me has been to keep in place our traditional chapel programs but try to substantially increase other variations and approaches.”

Pedal power: Hop on a bike for fun and fitness

Remember how great it felt to ride a bike when you were a kid? Likely you had one with no gears, a bell to ring when you wanted to signal someone to get out of the way, and a basket to carry your gear.

If you haven’t jumped on a bike since your grammar school days, maybe it’s time to try it again. There are good reasons to do that: Riding a bike can burn up to 500 calories an hour. It’s easy on your joints and helps to develop the muscles that stabilize your hips.
