Seniors who volunteer are happier and healthier

blog-vol.jpgYou know that volunteering is fun and fulfilling and makes you feel happier. Now there’s evidence that volunteering might help you live longer. Having a heart, studies have found, is good for your heart.

Several studies reported in a review of recent research on volunteering by the Corporation for National & Community Service suggest that older volunteers enjoy positive health benefits, are better able to function as they grow older and are better able to cope with and surmount health problems.

Active, engaged residents make activities director’s job fun

blog-burkhardt.jpgHow do you plan activities for well-educated, accomplished people like the residents of Ingleside at Rock Creek? You get a ton of assistance from them, says Activities Director Patty Butler-Burkhart.

“They tell me what they want,” Patty says. “I help pull the pieces together with them.”

A Certified Therapeutic Recreational Specialist (CTRS) and a graduate of the University of Maryland with a degree in recreation, Patty has worked exclusively with seniors for 33 years and loves the elder spirit and the stories they share.

Seniors who use social media feel more youthful, study finds

blog-social.jpgAre you on Facebook? Do you Skype? If you’re a savvy Silver Surfer, then you know how easy it is to keep in touch with friends and family through social media. Bet you didn’t know, though, that learning to use social media could benefit your overall mental health and well-being.

A two-year study by researchers at the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom found that older people who received training in use of social media were happier and—get this—felt younger than those in a control group.
